How it works:A beam of primary x-rays is emitted to the sample. The atoms of the sample are excited by the absorption of X-ray energy and emit secondary x-rays. Each chemical element emits x-rays of a specific energy. By measuring the characteristic energy and intensity of these emitted secondary x-rays, coating thickness gauges provide qualitative and Quantitative analysis information about the coating thickness and composition of the material being measured
